While staying in Cagliari, we drove on a day trip (Oct.10) for the first time, along the beautiful Southeast coast all the way to Villasimius at the Southeastern tip of the island.

About 15 minutes drive away from Gagliar's center, there are the beautiful beaches of Poetto -Spiaggia del Poetto  and of Calamosca Beach (see Cagliari post)

Further away, one and a half hours drive, along the Island's Southeastern most beautiful coastline, the panoramic curvy coastal road SP 17,  reveals on the mountainous side, impressive Granit pinnacles covered with verdant and colorful greenery, and many cactus plants loaded with fruits.

(there is a faster way, only 1 hour drive from Cagliari above the coast, but less scenic)

While the landscape on the sea side is graced with, promontories, stretches of stunning white sand beaches ,between enchanting cliffs and secluded rocky crown bay, crevasses and coves, inlets, lagoons and verdant hills dotted by colorful coastal villages, of which the most quint are that of, Solanas and the more popular Villasimius at the Capo Carbonara promontory.

One of the most spacious and beautiful

1 km beach, facing southwest, on the southeastern coast part of the Golfo degli Angeli.

It stretches out before a village, between the promontory of Capo Boi, and a rocky peak covered in Mediterranean greenery and is dominated by the Spanish tower of the same name.

On the day we visited the Solanas Beach with the kids, the weather, disappointingly, for the second consecutive day, continued to be cloudy, grey and drizzly, with the sea being very choppy, Still, we made the best out of the mid-day, by taking a long walk on the beach, now quite deserted the off season, while the grands played footsies with the incoming breaking waves.

The sun was playing Pick-a -Boo, in between the drizzling spouts, which made it for the kids irresistible to stay a shore, Once the parents' defenses, fatigued, the brave kids run into the water, delighted to bath and jump over the incoming waves.

Villasimius i- named the ‘pearl’ of the South,

On the promontory In the far Southeastern tip of the island, at the fabulous coastal Capo Carbonara marine area, nests the famous tourism destination Villasimius,

The kind of tourist resort town with a population of less than 4,000 during winter that swells to several tens of thousands in summer.

Charming fusion of picturesque beaches, hip nightlife and historical culture: of the former fishing village combined with great nature, make the visit a true treasure

Its landscape of, rocky coastlines, long beaches, lagoon and green areas, which are protective ecosystem to its biodiversity, offer an ideal habitat for many species to breed.

Capo Carbonara Marine Reserve

The landscape is divided into 2 bays by the promontory of the same name, covering a total of 86 square km from Capo Boi to the island of Serpentara, including Cavoli Island and the Seccadei Berni,, Secca di Mezzo, Secca di Libeccio, Secca dei Pescatelli and Secca di Santa Caterina shallows, where the Madonna del Naufrago, a statue by Pinuccio Sciola, lies, at the bottom of the sea. The statue of the Virgin of the Sea, lies on the bottom near Cavoli island., it is visited each year by a procession in mid-July. and it can be seen through a glass boat sail.

Up on the promontory there is the Aragonese tower built by Spaniards,

And the 17th c, the old Fortezza Vecchia fortress stands proudly over the harbor.

Nowadays, it hosts art exhibitions for the public .

The town's main center street - Via Umberto I  is dotted with pretty little shops and several restaurants, bars ice cream parlors and clubs.

At the evening we strolled there, under our umbrellas , it was terribly raining and the streets, shops and wine tasting stands, were empty of tourists and locals alike.

Following our successful escape from the Perpedera Resort at the Island's Northeastern region, and right prior to the arrival of Amit - Inbal's husband

we returned to Villasimius (Oct 16) as luckily, we manged to book, at the spare of the moment, 3 rooms for a week (a true challenge even this late in the season) in a wonderful beach hotel, - Hotel Simius Playa , which is situated, right on the amazing

Simius Beach.

Spiaggia id Simius - Simius Beach.-is Villasimius town's main beach, It is located

2 km south-east from, the small community's residential area, and 10 minutes walk from the center.

It is where the hotel we stayed in, is situated, facing the East side of the promontory..

This main beach of white sand which gives (half of) its name to Villasimius, stretches close to the Pond of Notteri, - the lagoon off the beach is separated by a narrow strip

of sand is a natural spectacle, an ecosystem which is an habitat to pink flamingos. and area which also attracts walkers and joggers.

On a walk by the Lagoon

The 2 km long sandy expanse over 50 m wide in some places, continues to the ancient Torre di Porto Giunco -Spanish tower of Porto Giunco, standing tall on the peninsula, halfway between the beaches of Timi Ama and isola Traias. looking over the Porto Giunco bay and the lighthouse on Isola dei Cavoli,

The splendid bay, protected from the wind, has a distinctive semicircular shape. offering crystal-clear sea, that reflects shades of green and blue and the seabed slopes gently out towards the open sea.. It is crowded with fish, thus snorkeling is quite popular here..

Simius beach gets crowded during high season, but during the months of April, May, September and October the beach can be almost be deserted.

Among the other great beaches facing the West side off the promontory. at the marina area of Capo Carbonara,- are Campus Beach - located at the mouth of a small river, and Campulongu Beach - surrounded by pines and junipers, dotted with white dunes, bordered by granite rocks and a cliff with tiny pebbly coves.

The Hotel we stayed in:

 Viale Matteotti, 91, Villasimius, 070 79311

A wonderful small boutique hotel, 100 m from the Simius beach.

Valerio Fosco is the hotel owner and this small highly recommended hotel

Nests in a Beautiful tropical garden, with a small pool, In front of the white sand Simius beach:, the greatly decorated comfortable, intimate and peaceful property grounds, with its spacious rooms that is served by friendly helpful staff, and offers very good breakfast is a fantastic choice to stay at, Our entire family loved the place, especially as the bad rainy weather, compelled us at times, to spend longer periods ,in doors.

The hotel also has a very good restaurant

where we had a wonderful dinner

Villasimius from the Sea

During the third day of our stay when the sun finally piped out from the cloudy carpet, we sized the opportunity, rented a speedboat, and sailed along the coast.

At times the sea was quite choppy and the sail felt more like a roller coaster ride, down on the rough water and up in the air, the next moment, followed by our loud screaming

of joy and fear.

The Boat Rental Company at the Vollasimius Marina. +. Taxi service numbers

Samuel - 39 371 1993263, whom we dealt with , works at the Boat Rental company and was also kind to arrange a taxi ride for our daughter Keren from Villasimius to Cagliari's Airport in the middle of the night (one hour drive =120 Euros)

On the day the kids, sadly, departed (Oct 22nd) we took a drive on the narrow SP 18 road along the coast from Villasimius, further up Northeast through the enchanting Sarrabus district toward Costa Rei

Mountains, lush hills,  most bluish sea , next to the fine white sandy small bays, and rocky coves are the scenery in between small communities and resorts.

Once both our daughters and the grands departed, and 2 days prior to our flight from Gagliari to Rome and then to San Francisco, we left this enchanting Southern east coast of Sardinia, and stayed the last 2 nights in Cagliari.

This long voyage which started on Sept 10th with a flight to the UK would end when we land in California.

Bye Bye Villasimius.. .
